We all have fears, some rational and others not. The key is to identify your fears and have a plan for conquering them. Here are 5 easy steps to conquer your fears.
1 – Admit your Fears
We sometimes feel weak when we admit we have problems or fears. By admitting your fears, you take away the stigma of hiding your fear and you can begin addressing them. So stand up and have the courage to admit your fears.
2 – Face your Fears
Let’s imagine your fear is public speaking. If that’s the case, start participating in activities that require you to speak in front of others. But keep it to small groups until you get more comfortable with it. After a few months, you will find that you will be more relaxed and comfortable doing it.
3 – Practice Deep Breathing
If a fear surfaces, focus on your breath. Stop, focus on your breath, take a breath in for 7 seconds, then exhale slowly. After doing this for a minute or two, your heart rate will slow down and you will reclaim your composure.
4 – Think of the Worst Case Scenario
Many times, we blow things out of proportion due to our fears. When you get stressed because of a fear, think about the worst thing that could happen. Then think about what you would do if the worst case scenario happens. By having a plan, you will find that it’s not nearly as bad has you had played it in your mind.
5 – Use the Aware Technique
When you feel fear arising, address it with the AWARE technique:
- Admit and accept your fear
- Watch your fear and face it
- Accept the worst case scenario and plan for it
- Really focus on your breathing
- Expect the best
Take control of your fears by admitting them, facing them, accepting the worst case scenario and focusing on your breathing. If you have found ways to address your fears, drop us a note below.
